  • The total capacity in MW per year of independent electricity generation projects registered in South Africa. It includes Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) projects rand other private projects registered with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa). It was created to compare the total registered capacity of REIPPPP projects with other Nersa-registered projects. The data comes from the Independent Power Producers Office and Nersa. Note: Not all registered projects are operational.

  • Cumulative capacity in MW of private electricity generation projects registered with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa per province, per year. Private energy projects with a capacity of more than 100MW have to register with Nersa for a generation licence. Smaller projects between 100kW and 100MW must register if they intend to be connected to the electricity grid. Projects include renewable and non-renewable as well as battery storage. The data starts from February 2018. It is updated monthly.
